Step-by-Step Guide: How to get from Puerto Escondido to Mazunte/Zipolite
Mazunte and Zipolite are popular beach destinations, especially for those already in Puerto Escondido. The journey to Mazunte takes about an hour, making it perfect for a day or weekend trip. Here’s how to get there easily!
By Public Transport
Tip: You can also flag down buses/minivans along Highway 200 instead of going all the way to the station.
Step 1: Start at Transportes Delfines
- Location: Head to the bus/minivan station opposite Chedraui in Centro, known as Transportes Delfines Puerto Escondido. View Location.
Step 2: Board the Bus/Minivan
- Look for buses/minivans with a sign in the front window indicating “Pochutla.”
- Cost: The fare is approximately 60 pesos
- Frequency: Departures are every 30 minutes starting from 7 AM – The last one in usually about 6pm
Step 3: Get off at San Antonio Junction
- Location: Get off at the San Antonio junction, just after the gas station where you’ll see an OXXO store.
Step 4: Catch a Collectivo to Mazunte
- Cost: A collectivo will pick you up for about 15 pesos (USD 0.75).
- Final Destination: If you’re heading to Zipolite, stay on the collectivo, as it continues to that town. Be sure to signal for the driver to stop when you reach your destination.
By Taxi/Driving
Option 1: Taxi
- Cost: Taxis from Puerto Escondido to Mazunte generally cost around 1800 pesos (about 90 USD).
- Tip: If you can find fellow travelers, consider carpooling to split the cost.
Option 2: Private Car or Scooter Rental
- Scooter Rental: You can rent a scooter for around 200-400 pesos per day.
- Car Rental: You can rent a car from 800- 2000 pesos per day.
- Travel Time: Driving takes just over 1.5 hours, while the scooter ride can take a bit longer, depending on riding confidence and road conditions.
